The Power Of Why

The Power Of Why

Simon Sinek has a very clear message for all of us: people want to believe in what you’re doing and, more importantly, why you’re doing it. Everything from product-based companies to the leaders in an organization need to focus on their why not on their what. Everyone focuses on the what. To set yourself apart, to be different, to be the brand consumers want to be part of, you need to focus on the why.

Power Of Why Key Takeaways

The World’s Simplest Idea: Why

While everyone else in the marketplace is focusing on their what, you need to be focusing on your why. So many organizations (and individuals) move from the outside of the circle (their what) to the inside (their why). But, that isn’t how Sinek suggests you do it. He says that the emphasis should be on the why. The why is what people believe in, not the what. The what is just a product or service to purchase. Your why is the reason you exist. It’s what makes you get out of bed in the morning.

Talking From The Inside Out

How often have you gone to make a decision, but walked away saying, “something just doesn’t feel right.” What does a feeling have to do with making a decision? You could be looking at all of the available facts, and still, something is off. It’s your gut reaction. That’s the power of why. If something doesn’t feel right, then you most likely aren’t connecting with a why. We look for things to believe in. We want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. That belief stems from a why. That’s exactly why you have to start from the inside of the circle and move your way to the outside. At the end of the day, people aren’t looking to buy what you do, they’re looking to buy why you do it.

Tipping the Market

So, what does this all have to do with marketing? Your why is your tipping point. It’s how you reach the masses because you can’t reach the masses without first reaching the early adopters and the innovators. In order to increase your share of the marketplace, you need to first reach the ones who are ready to believe in something. How do you do that? You share your why. You make your story about why you do what you do because what you do proves what you believe. And, at the end of the day, people are just looking to believe in something.
