The Internet of Things.

It’s a strangely unsophisticated name to describe the next wave of smart devices impacting all industries in a big way. From washing machines and thermostats to manufacturing equipment and portable health monitors, the Internet of Things is nothing short of the next technological revolution.

The Future of IoT

Not convinced that the Internet of Things (IoT) is as ubiquitous as some people say? Here are some stats that will make you think again:

  • Experts predict that by 2020, over 200 billion devices will be a part of the Internet of Things. (Intel)
  • Globally, an estimated 127 new devices connect to the internet every second. (McKinsey)
  • By 2020, there will be 26 connected devices for every person on earth. (Intel)
  • Global manufacturers will invest approximately $70 billion on IoT solutions in 2020, up from $29 billion just a few years ago in 2015. (Business Insider)

The craziest thing about all of this is that Fishers, Indiana is looking to lead the charge into the future for IoT.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Innovation in Fishers

Fishers has long positioned itself as the place of entrepreneurship and innovation. The leaders and thinkers in our community support new ideas with a voracity that inspires greatness. That’s why we are so excited for the grand opening of the IoT Lab right here in downtown Fishers.

The initiative is headed up by none other than John Wechsler, who is the mastermind behind Launch Fishers, Fail Fest, Formstack, and so much more. John noticed the collaboration and innovation coming out of Launch Fishers and knew it was something special. So special in fact, that he came up with the idea to create a similar concept specifically for entrepreneurs and businesses involved in IoT.

“Just about anything that you could dream up that could be internet connected, we want to be able to accommodate that,” John said in a video interview published by the City of Fishers. “I think we have a great opportunity to establish a leadership position today that will last for generations to come.”

About the Lab

The 24,000-square-foot facility is nothing short of epic. It will have everything a member needs under one roof, from resources to developers to a complete workshop where innovators can prototype to their heart’s delight. The space even has a fresh, fun, contemporary look thanks to the interior design talent of Debbie Wechsler.

Though IoT Lab is only just now opening, it has significant momentum. IoT Lab already has committed members that are leaders in the IoT space, such as ClearObject and Rook Security. The IoT Lab has also gleaned an impressive list of sponsors that will be involved in pushing IoT technology from Fishers to new heights.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, who has led the charge on making a home for innovators in Fishers, believes that the IoT Lab has great potential for our community.

“I think it creates a unique opportunity for us to be at the forefront of this new burgeoning economy,” Mayor Fadness said in a video interview published by the City of Fishers.

Iconic Digital is proud to be a sponsor of IoT Lab. We’ve had the great honor of working on the IoT Lab website and we could not be more excited about IoT Lab’s Grand Opening this week! If you want to see what all the hype is about, reserve your spot for the grand opening and see for yourself!
